Indian shares ended a choppy session modestly higher on Monday after the government said it would allow qualified foreign investors direct access to Indian stock markets from January 15.

Asian stocks fell on the first trading day of 2012, as investors continued to remain wary of the ongoing European debt crisis and its impact on global growth.
